My experience of studying the Master in Sustainability at the University of Sonora has been enriching, because it was an opportunity to strengthen my professional knowledge and learn the richness of Mexican culture. The warmth of my classmates made easier my life in another country, which is a challenge.
The grant from the National Council of Science and Technology during my process was very helpful. Now I have a greater awareness of the actions that I have to take every day to help weave a better future for all.
Professors and students welcomed me warmly here in Hermosillo. I do not speak Spanish very well, so they helped me a lot here with for example getting an apartment, Internet connection, furniture… It’s quite easy to make friends here and almost everybody speaks English. There are also lectures in English which I can join from time to time. Professor and students involved me here and also introduced themselves. The university has a manageable size and is provided with lots of stores for buying food and drinks. The UNISON established recycling container on the campus to improve the environmental performance. Besides this, there are a lot of projects in the master student program to deal with local problems. I really can recommend the Universidad de Sonora as a foreign student. I had never the feeling to be lost or on my own, if I had a problem there were many people trying to help me and my professor gives his best to make the residence as comfortable as possible for me.
I am very glad to have the possibility to live a half year in Hermosillo. The tutors are very friendly and helpful at the UNISON. The people here are so nice and I felt immediately welcome. It doesn’t need long to start a conversation with foreign people, because Mexicans are so open. Because of this attitude I don’t miss Germany a lot.
Also the food is totally new for me. First I was a bit nervous because I am a vegetarian and the state Sonora is famous for their good meat. But in the end I feel very comfortable with the food here. The nature here is unique, too. It is the first time for me in a desert and I am absolutely surprised. I thought a desert would be grey, sandy and meagre, but it isn’t this way. The environment is colourful not only because of so many amazing species of cactuses and birds.
Moreover the assistance of the UNISON is excellent. I have a great support with my project as well as in all private situations. I never feel lost or irritated, because it is possible to contact someone at all times. I am totally happy that I choose Hermosillo for my internship and I can only recommend it to everyone. So don’t hesitate to have your best time in your life here at the UNISON!!
The UNISON is a very beautiful school. There are a lot of places where students can meet between lessons. Many possibilities to buy food and drinks and you have a lot of plants on the Campus, which complete the nice view of the University.
The Professors are nice and they helped us a lot with different kind of problems. The students are super friendly and kind. The other Mexican students gave us immediately the feeling to be welcome.
